Campus Tour Script
It has come to our attention that some of the information being communicated on tours is incorrect. Please pay special attention to these areas on your campus tours:
  • Division III Athletics
    • When talking about Messiah's athletic programs, simply state that "Messiah is an NCAA Division III school with 11 men's and 11 women's varsity teams"
      • Do not specifically state that we are DIII because of the size of the school.
  • Gen Ed/Foreign Language requirements
    • We always want to avoid speaking about ways to "get out of" courses, because that communicates that they are not valuable. For example, you should say -
      • the language placement test "allows you to be placed in the level of a language that is right for you" OR
      • study abroad/cross-cultural courses "allow you to fulfill your language requirement by being immersed in another culture".
  • Film, Media, & Broadcasting Suite
    • Located in Hostetter Chapel, this studio includes a television studio space, a simulated newsroom, an endless floor green screen, a fully equipped control room, a Foley sound studio, and a digital editing suite
    • Fun fact: we have the same type of camera that was used to film the Hobbit!
    • This is a great space for students interested in Digital Media, Film, Communication, and Broadcasting

Upcoming Events
  • Christmas at Hershey!
    • Let's celebrate the end of the semester and Christmastime together with our yearly tradition of going to Hershey Park Christmas Candylane!
    • Admissions will cover the full cost of your ticket (if you RSVP, make sure you can definitely make it!)
    • RSVP here (yes or no) by Friday, November 18

    • Lunch runs from 11:00-11:50 and 12:00-12:50 in the Martin Commons
    • If you do not have a meal plan, we will provide a meal ticket

  • Spring Training
    • Save the date for the Ambassador Spring semester training on Tuesday, January 31 from 3:00-5:00.

Hospitality & Inclusive Excellence
  • It was great seeing most of you at the professional development events this week! Here are a few reminders and takeaways from Kevin's session:
    • Be mindful and aware of the way you are representing the college and how your own biases may be impacting the way in which you interact with others.
    • Home is not so much a place as it is a feeling. What can you do to help make Messiah feel more like home for prospective students & their families?
    • As a Christ-follower and an Ambassador, you have the ability to bring Christ's kingdom with you wherever you go
    • "Since you cannot do good to all, you are to pay special attention to those who, by accidents of time, or pace, or circumstance, are brought into closer connection with you." - St. Augustine of Hippo

    • THANK YOU to those of you who have already signed up to host for the first two overnights.

Improve Your Campus Tours!
  • The campus tour is often the most important factor in a student's decision to attend a college! I encourage you to read this article "5, Like, Totally Awesome Public Speaking Lessons From College Admissions Guides To Use At Work" or at least read through some of the key takeaways below:
    • 1. Make Connections - Engage students by name, make good eye contact, and gather everyone around you when you stop to talk (rather than sharing information as the group walks behind you).
    • 2. Use Stories, and Use Them Early - "The difference between the good and great guides is the ability to offer a personal story to answer a question." Also, the first thing you say is critical - that first impression stays with the group for the rest of the tour.
    • 3. Be Authentic - Communicate your love for Messiah and the importance it has played in your life. What are ways in which you can share what you love about Messiah in a genuine way during your tours?
    • 4. Be in the Moment - What can help you concentrate on your tour group/the student you are hosting overnight and keep them as your main priority, even as you balance your busy schedule?
    • 5. Be in Charge - Tour guides "need to encourage questions, politely manage the parent who is dominating the tour with their personal questions, and make decisions in the moment."

Give a tour on Homecoming!
  • We are in need of two experienced tour guides to give campus tours to alumni on Saturday, October 15, Homecoming weekend. The tours are at 1:00 pm and start in Eisenhower. Please contact Kristin at Ambassadors@messiah.edu if you are available.

Spotlight Days
  • In addition to the two fall Open Houses, we have three Spotlight Days this fall. A Spotlight Day is an event day focused on a specific "School" or academic area. Please only sign up to greet/give a tour on a Spotlight Day that corresponds with your major.

Contact a Student
  • Thank you so much to those of you who have signed up to help out with Contact a Student. The updated page is almost ready to go live and should be up and running by next week, at which point, you may begin receiving emails from prospective students.
